How to diversify your savings?

Diversifier son épargne : comment répartir ses placements selon ses objectifs, son horizon et ses besoins de disponibilité ? Découvrez les principes à connaître et la place possible de l’investissement au capital d’une PME avec CARINVEST GROUP.

How to diversify your savings

Diversifying your savings means spreading your money across different investments, business activities and time horizons, rather than relying on a single source of returns. The right allocation depends on your goals, your need for access to your money and the risks you can accept.

Savings accounts, investment funds, property and investments in company shares can serve different purposes. The aim is to understand the role each plays within your overall finances.

Why diversify your savings?

Your wealth may be more concentrated than you realise. A homeowner whose assets consist mainly of property depends heavily on the property market. An employee who also holds a substantial stake in their employer combines employment and investment risks linked to the same company.

Diversification aims to reduce these concentrations. It spreads exposure across sectors, companies, geographical areas and investment types. It does not eliminate the risk of loss: several investments can experience difficulties at the same time.

Start with your goals and available savings

Before choosing another investment, ask yourself three questions:

How much money should I keep accessible for unexpected expenses?

Which projects will I need to finance over the next few years?

What proportion of my assets can I commit for longer and afford to lose?

Money set aside for an upcoming expense serves a different purpose from an investment intended for retirement. Your investment horizon should guide your choice alongside the returns you seek.

Maintaining an accessible emergency reserve can help you handle unexpected expenses without having to sell an investment under unfavourable conditions.

The French financial markets regulator, the AMF, provides a tool for reviewing investments according to their risk, time horizon and availability. Mon zoom épargne is available in French.

Diversify your investments and what they finance

Holding several accounts or investment products does not necessarily provide broad diversification. Different funds may own similar assets, while a single investment account can contain a range of exposures.

To assess your diversification, review what you actually hold: accessible cash for near-term needs, shares or bonds, property exposure and, potentially, stakes in unlisted companies.

Each option has its own costs, risks, operating conditions and exit arrangements. The variety of underlying exposures matters more than the number of products you hold.

Where can an investment in an SME fit?

Investing in the equity of an unlisted small or medium-sized enterprise, or SME, means becoming a shareholder in a company whose shares are not traded on a stock exchange.

This approach may introduce an additional business activity into an existing portfolio. Assessing the opportunity requires examining the company, its funding, its business model and the rights attached to its shares.

The absence of daily trading does not mean that the investment’s value is stable. It can make a market price harder to establish and the shares harder to sell. A stake in a single SME remains a concentrated exposure to that company.

CARINVEST GROUP: understanding an automotive business

Cars are part of everyday life. Used vehicles meet familiar mobility needs, from commuting to equipping a family or business. This makes the underlying activity easier to understand, while its risks still require careful assessment.

CARINVEST GROUP presents the SCPA, Solution Collective de Placement Automobile, an investment approach that contributes to financing an automotive activity involving a used-vehicle fleet operated through lease-to-own arrangements.

Without an exclusive focus on a particular brand or powertrain, the business prioritises vehicles that are in demand and suited to customers’ needs. Its activity involves acquiring, managing and commercially operating vehicles to meet mobility needs.

Depending on the offering, a subscription may combine shares and a shareholder loan. These components carry different rights and repayment arrangements, as set out in the contractual documentation.

This approach may be considered as part of a diversification strategy by investors able to accept its constraints. The existence of vehicles and their insurance do not guarantee repayment of the investment. The ability to resell a vehicle does not mean that the investor can sell their shares or recover their shareholder loan whenever they wish.

Common mistakes to avoid when diversifying your savings

Choosing solely on the basis of advertised returns

Also examine costs, tax treatment, commitment periods, risks and exit conditions. Higher potential returns must be assessed alongside the associated risks and constraints.

Confusing regular payments with access to capital

Periodic payments do not mean that the original investment can be withdrawn at any time. It is important to distinguish the payment schedule from the conditions governing repayment of the investment.

Investing solely for a tax benefit

A potential tax advantage does not automatically compensate for risk or an unsuitable commitment period. Consider it after understanding the investment and assessing whether it suits your circumstances.

Accumulating similar exposures

Several investments linked to the same sector or corporate group may still leave you heavily concentrated. Look at the economic connections between investments, beyond their commercial names.

How to get started

Begin with an overview of your finances. Identify existing concentrations and the money genuinely available for additional investments.

Before subscribing, ask yourself: what role would this investment play in my portfolio, and what would happen if I could not recover the money when I wanted it?
